OMG - this man is to teeth that Ronaldo is to football. The undisputed goat of oral healthcare. Went in with serious toothache and came out with not only a filling but a sugar free lollipop. Gum disease is no laughing matter but made me feel less guilty about the 27 calipos I have during the summer.I was apprehensive due to my anaesthetic allergy but his alternative pain numbing procedure was not only pleasant but life affirming. God speed to those who go elsewhere, you put your life in danger ⚠️

After many years of avoiding dental visits I developed severe dental issues. I attended Dr Renan and he changed my life for the better. Since getting my implants, I am no longer embarrassed to speak or smile. The care was second to none. Dara is also amazing. She made me feel so relaxed during each visit and Dr Renan was so kind and gentle. All reception staff lovely too. I could not recommend Friary Court Dental highly enough.

Just completed Invisalign treatment and would like to give Gosih a special mention, she was absolutely fantastic, kind and always friendly and most importantly answered all our questions and concerns and always gave us plenty of time to discuss any queries. She was truly fantastic and the one constant we could rely on at every visit. Thanks Gosih

I’ve visited the dental clinic for the first time today and I have to say the service and attention to detail have been outstanding. My dental issue was fixed within the hour and I left a very satisfied customer. Dr Darren (I hope I got the name and person right) took very good care of my teeth explained the whole procedure in detail and made sure I’m aware of any potential issues that might come up in the future based on his assessment. I want to say thank you to the whole team for the quick turnaround as I needed the appointment sooner and I will be definitely a returning patient.

Haven't been to the dentist in a few years & felt a bit apprehensive. From the moment I walked into the clinic everyone was so friendly. Dr Darren Hill was so welcoming & put me at ease. He was very thorough & explained everything. Would highly recommend, thank you 😊

I've been to many dentists in the past few years, and none of them compare to the care at Friary Court Dental which I’ve been with for the past 1.5 years. James, the implant specialist, is incredibly professional and kind, which is a huge help if you have any anxieties. He takes the time to discuss options and explain everything. During my surgery, James and the dental nurse Dara were amazing, ensuring I was comfortable and informed. The care I've received here is second to none. Everyone at Friary Court has played a major part in helping me achieve the smile I have always wanted.

What should I know before having a tooth removed?

Everything you need to know about extractions in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare

Tooth Extractions

What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket when it can no longer be restored. At Dentistry.ie, we only recommend this when alternatives like fillings or crowns are not possible.

Tooth Extractions

When should a tooth definitely be removed?

If severe decay, infection, or damage makes repair impossible, extraction may be necessary. Even then, we always explore whether a filling or crown could save the tooth first. Families in Dublin City Centre, Kilkenny, Kimmage, Balbriggan, and Artane appreciate our commitment to preservation.

Tooth Extractions

What happens after an extraction?

Once a tooth is removed, surrounding teeth may shift. That’s why we recommend planning for replacement solutions like implants or bridges to protect your bite. We’ll create a tailored plan to suit your needs.

Tooth Extractions

Can extractions be done comfortably?

Yes. Extractions are carried out under local anaesthetic so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Our caring team takes things at your pace, and sedation can be arranged for patients who feel particularly nervous.

How does the extraction process work?

Your extraction journey in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare

Initial assessment

Your dentist will examine your tooth and review X-rays to determine whether it can be saved with a filling or crown, or whether extraction is necessary.

Preparing for treatment

We’ll explain the process in full and answer your questions. Local anaesthetic will be applied to numb the area and ensure you are comfortable.

The extraction

The tooth is gently removed using specialist instruments. Our dentists prioritise preserving bone and gum tissue for future stability.

Aftercare and replacement planning

We’ll provide aftercare advice for healing and discuss replacement options like implants or dentures to restore your smile.

How much does a tooth extraction cost in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare?

What can you expect to pay for an extraction?

The cost depends on the complexity of the procedure, but we keep pricing transparent and explain everything in advance.

What questions do people in Dublin, Kilkenny & Kildare ask about extractions?

Your extraction
questions
answered

I’m scared of having a tooth out – should I be worried?

Extractions don’t have to be scary. It is always better to preserve a tooth, even for a few years. Think of your mouth like a game of Jenga; the more blocks that are pulled out, the more likely the whole tower will fall. That’s why, here at Dentistry.ie in Dublin, Kilkenny and Kildare, we will always do our utmost to save a tooth wherever possible.

Why do dentists try to save teeth instead of removing them?

The more back teeth that are removed, the less likely the front teeth will last properly. Only when absolutely essential will we recommend removing a tooth. We believe the function of the mouth depends on retaining as many teeth as possible, which helps keep it healthier and more functional for longer.

What happens if a tooth is removed?

When a tooth is removed, the surrounding teeth slowly move out of position. A tilted tooth is more fragile and can withstand much less pressure than an upright one. Even the stable teeth on the opposite side of the mouth can suffer as they take more strain. Over time, this means the whole mouth functions at only a fraction of its original capability.

When should a tooth definitely be removed?

Only when it is impossible for a tooth to be repaired by a crown or filling should the tooth be removed. Even with a slight chance of success, we recommend attempting to save the tooth.

What problems can wisdom teeth cause?

This can cause the gum surrounding the wisdom tooth to become infected. Prior to modern medicine, in years gone by, this could often be fatal and even these days can prove highly unpleasant. They tend to hold food against the back of the teeth in front, which can drive decay in the most vulnerable location a tooth has. In rare situations, wisdom teeth can decay like normal teeth which can cause deep-seated dental abscesses. Which cannot be resolved with a simple extraction. This occurrence would require invasive surgery by a specialist.

Why do wisdom teeth cause problems?

For the vast majority of people, wisdom teeth are unnecessary and do nothing but cause problems for the long-term health of their mouths. Very often wisdom teeth are angled against the teeth in front of them and don’t come up properly. Frequently, half the tooth is buried in the gum and the other half in the mouth.

What symptoms are common with a problematic wisdom tooth?

The symptoms of a problematic wisdom tooth include:

  • Swollen jaw
  • Redness around the area
  • Sensitive or painful gums around the tooth

If you experience any of the above symptoms, do bear in mind, these symptoms can be caused by other factors. However, you should still seek medical attention.

How long is the wisdom tooth extraction procedure?

This is very dependent on the difficulty of the procedure.

Is a wisdom tooth extraction painful?

Generally, you will be completely numb during the removal of the wisdom tooth. Most people will be sore for a few days after the extraction. This pain will vary depending on the complexity/difficulty of the extraction.

How common are problematic wisdom teeth?

It is recommended that a problematic wisdom tooth is removed between the ages of 18 – 24. After this age, it becomes much more difficult to extract because the bone becomes denser and the roots finish forming. There are even special techniques to remove wisdom teeth in the early to mid-teens before they finish forming.
